Poll - Purchase time

Poll time everybody!

The last poll results are in.  My previous question was: How many pages do you give a book before giving up?

Depends on the book  -  29%
100 or so  -  23%
I always finish them  -  21%
50 or so  -  13%
Half of it  -  8%
Less than 20  -  2%

Considering a previous poll where 'I finish every book I read' had 51% of the respondent answering with a yes, the results of the page rule look like they almost confirm that half the readers are persistent. What is interesting is the breakdown of the score for the answers in conjunction with this.  For most of the readers, it depends on the book.  I think that's a good sign but as I said when posting the poll, the rule is a good way to try to stick to the better books with so much of them on our shelves.  Still, a quarter of the readers with a 100 or so rule is a surprise for me.

What do you think of the results?

For my next question, let's survey the economic considerations and eagerness of us, the readers. I want to know more about the moment when you decide to buy a book and if the pricing factor is important.

On my part, even if I buy less books than before with all the ARCs I receive, I have to admit that I have always been a first day buyer.  I still often buy books right when they are released even if I'm not always certain where they will fit into my to-read pile or if I'll read them soon... Thinking about it, I'm not sure it's really a good idea for my wallet but everybody must have some compulsive side... no?

Moreover, I'm always struggling not to buy books on sale, mostly so for the cheap e-books deal coming up more often than not. I think that the only book I ever pre-ordered is George R.R. Martin's A Dance with Dragons. Anyway, I never heard about a shortage in recently books or at least never had to experience it...

When/how do you buy your books?

Pre-Order
First day buy
Waiting for deal
Used books
Borrow from library

I can't afford to buy on a whim so I use the marvellous services of my local library; then if I REALLY like the book, I wait till Christmas or birthdays and use the Amazon vouchers I get as presents to obtain copies of the books in question. By then, they're often discounted or, if I'm lucky, I'll get a VGC used copy rock bottom. Last time I ordered a brand new book was Abercrombie's The Heroes and tbh, I think I should have got it from the library first.
