March releases

Friday, March 1, 2013

March will be a busy month for Fantasy readers.  It's the Fantasy debut for 2008 Philip K. Dick award winner David Walton with Quintessence and also the release of a first novel for Luke Scull.  Some interesting follow-ups make an appearance but for High Kingdom by Pierre Pevel (it was on my 2013 coming up list), the information about the book is... incoherent or dubious so we'll have to wait. Enjoy!

The Grim Company
Luke Scull
March 1st (UK)
(September for US and Canada)
The grey granite walls of Dorminia rise to three times the height of a man, surrounding the city on all sides save for the south, where the Broken Sea begins. The stone is three-foot thick at its weakest point and can withstand all but the heaviest assault. The Crimson Watch patrol the streets even as Salazar's Mindhawks patrol the skies.
The Grey City was not always so. But something has changed. Something has broken at its heart. Perhaps the wild magic of the dead Gods has corrupted Dorminia's Magelord, as it has the earth itself. Or perhaps this iron-fisted tyranny is the consequence of a lifetime of dark deeds...
Still, pockets of resistance remain. When two formidable Highlanders save the life of a young rebel, it proves the foundation for an unlikely fellowship. A fellowship united against tyranny, but composed of self-righteous outlaws, crippled turncoats and amoral mercenaries. A grim company. But with the world entering an Age of Ruin, this is not a time of heroes...

The Bloodfire Quest
The Dark Legacy of Shannara book 2
Terry Brooks
March 12th
For the first time in his career, Terry will be publishing a book every six months from the start to end of this series: here is the second in a brand-new trilogy, following The Wards of Faerie, in the New York Times bestselling Shannara universe!
Long ago, many dangerous creatures were locked behind a magical barrier, bringing peace and prosperity to the land. But now those barriers are eroding, and generations of embittered prisoners are about to escape. War seems inevitable...unless a few brave souls can stem the tide. While some venture into the forbidden lands, others must undertake a perilous quest-a quest whose success will mean the death of a young girl who has barely even begun to live, but whose failure will have unimaginable consequences. From riveting start to cliffhanger ending, this is an epic for the ages!

Shattered Pillars
Eternal Sky book 2
Elizabeth Bear
March 19th
The Shattered Pillars is the second book of Bear’s The Eternal Sky trilogy and the sequel to Range of Ghosts. Set in a world drawn from our own great Asian Steppes, this saga of magic, politics and war sets Re-Temur, the exiled heir to the great Khagan and his friend Sarmarkar, a Wizard of Tsarepheth, against dark forces determined to conquer all the great Empires along the Celedon Road.
Elizabeth Bear is an astonishing writer, whose prose draws you into strange and wonderful worlds, and makes you care deeply about the people and the stories she tells. The world of The Eternal Sky is broadly and deeply created—her award-nominated novella, "Bone and Jewel Creatures" is also set there.

Quintessence
David Walton
March 19th
Imagine an Age of Exploration full of alchemy, human dissection, sea monsters, betrayal, torture, religious controversy, and magic. In Europe, the magic is thin, but at the edge of the world, where the stars reach down close to the Earth, wonders abound. This drives the bravest explorers to the alluring Western Ocean. Christopher Sinclair is an alchemist who cares only about one thing: quintessence, a substance he believes will grant magical powers and immortality. And he has a ship.

The Marching Dead
Lee Battersby
March 26th
Find the dead a King, save himself, win the love of his life, live happily ever after. No wonder Marius dos Helles is bored. But now something has stopped the dead from, well, dying.
It’s up to Marius, Gerd, and Gerd’s not-dead-enough Granny to journey across the continent and put the dead back in the afterlife where they belong.

I thought I read a while back that The Grim Company didn't have a North American release date set yet. I can't seem to find a copy of the book in the US.(at least not on any of the major websites).

I'm looking forward to Quintessence though. Ever since I read about it on your blog a while back it's been on my radar.

A great month indeed! I'll be picking up Grim Company and The Marching Dead for sure... Is Anon correct Phil? Is the Grim Company going to be released in North America this month or is that a UK date?

Hum... it's indeed the UK release date for The Grim Company (published by Head of Zeus). Ace-Roc (Penguin) will publish in the US & Canada in September.

I'll update the post. Sorry guys... I'm used to buy books that I don't receive by the publishers from The Book Depository when they are released first in the UK so I tend to forget to mention it.
